Middle East and Islamic Studies (MEIS) at ILCAA, TUFS is a research group established in 2010 after the 5-year large-scale project “Research and Educational Project for Middle East and Islamic Studies.” In 2016, MEIS joined the NIHU Area Studies Project for the Modern Middle East “Towards a Pluralistic and Multi-Valued Society: People and Cultures of the Middle East in the Age of Global Change.” In this six year project, MEIS collaborates five other Japanese institutions such as National Museum of Ethnology, Sophia University, Akita University and Kyoto University, and tackle the research topic “Human mobility, network building, and transformation of states, societies and religions.”
